Writing to Save My Life
Literary goals are personal
People write for different reasons. With all the commotion around writing and publishing and measures of success, I think it’s important to keep in mind the diversity of purpose.
For me, at this point in my life, writing is inherently for my own satisfaction, imbued with literary and philosophical purposes. I strive to define what this means every day. I have an artistic vision of where I want to go, along with the level of eloquence I aspire to attain.
There seems to be a tapestry I am trying to uncover.
I imagine this is true for other writers as well.
Of course the big question is about money. Everyone wants to figure out the money. I’m hoping eloquence will eventually pay the bills because sure, I would like to make money writing. Who wouldn’t? I try to cultivate a business mindset, as the writing advocates recommend.
However, it feels as if I have two horses in one race, and only one can win.
These are the forces at work shaping my writing style.
When I was about eight years old, I realized I would be most content to spend the rest of my life writing. Why? I had run out of things to read. I had read every book in the house. Some twice or more. The origin of my ambition to write was born from having nothing to read. I promised myself then that I would spend my life writing.
